Hors d'œuvre

Hello!

So I've humored the idea of starting a blog for many years now but just never really got motivated enough by anything to write. Well as you all are fully aware of now but I've begun my career as a chef as the Culinary Institute of America! What better experience to write about? So without further delay...meal service begins..now!
After 5 long years of waiting, I'm finally on my way to the C.I.A. in Hyde Park New York. It definitely has not sunk in yet and I don't think it really will until I start classes...

edit: It sunk in now...

BUT HOLY HELL I'M FINALLY GONNA BE A *#@^$ CHEF!

ahem...

The last several weeks have been a mad rush to get all the documents turned in, financial aid settled, medical releases filled out, and everything in between. Finished packing today...not bad considering that my flight leaves in about 5 hours.

Checked Bags: 50 lbs and 51lbs
Hoo Haa, what up now Delta Airline?!

Then I waited...

and waited...

and FINALLY it was time to go.

Mom drove me over to LAX and I went through all the logistics of getting my bags checked in...said my good byes...security check...blah blah blah...bloop.

Timing was perfect though. I never really stopped moving my way to the terminal but I was in no way rushed. By the time I got there, they had just began boarding my section so I got on. I got settled in with about 15 minutes left to go and there was no one sitting next to me! Two seats completely empty so I'm thinking to myself, "Hell yea, I got three seats for me, there's a TV on the seat...this is going to be an awesome flight." Right? RIGHT?!

WRONG!!

With about 5 minutes to go, I see a couple walk in and eyeball my area. The husband is entirely wasted and was one of those talkative but not really coherent drunks so any guesses what my next 4 and a half hours were like? That's not even the best part though. The wife decided to bring her dog with them. The thing was whining and whimpering and clearly did not want to be shoved in a carrier bag and stuffed under the seat. But no worries! It was hypoallergenic. That makes it totally okay! All I could think about was if that dog decided it needed to relieve itself, I'd be forced to flush it down the toilet. Course then someone down below may be hit by falling blue dog shaped ice...anyways I digress!

Greeenn...
The flight lands in Detroit for a layover and I book it off the plane. Detroit Airport is HUGE! There was a connection tunnel between the terminals that was completely lit up with I'm assuming a a floppity-jillion alternating LED lights. Was a nice little sensory trip especially after being sleep deprived and very hungry.

So the waiting begins again in Detroit but luckily there were some cool people to talk to this time around...plus an Einstein Bro's Bagel Breakfast sandwich to munch on. After about another 4 hours or so, we began boarding the the connection flight to Stewart International in Newburgh, New York.

This flight was pretty standard so nothing really to say about it. When I arrived in New York, my taxi was there waiting. This really cool guy named Vinny was my driver and he helped me grab my bags, loaded up, and away we go. He took me to a Target on the way so I was able to pick up a few more items I'd need. Along they way we chatted and turns out his nephew went to the CIA too! He told me to give him a call if I ever need a ride anywhere or if any friends or family are visiting and he'll drive for cheap. Shameless plug! So guys WHEN you come visit, hit up Vinny and he give you good price! He also offered me a summer job at his nephews bistro. woot job security.

Alright, now we're getting to the good stuff. We finally get to the campus and Vinny helps me unload everything. I check in with the RA's and head up to my room to meet the roommate. Surprise! He's in California on the Agriculture and Wines trip and will not be back until mid-April which means I get a double room all to myself for two weeks! w00t!

I got there pretty early and didn't have an obscene amount of stuff to unpack so I got it all done quickly and decided to go explore the campus a little before the newcomers hall meeting.

This whole estate used to belong to a Jesuit Monastery but the founders of the school purchased the property and have been slowly developing it ever since. The main dining hall is the chapel and has all the original stain glass windows. Absolutely amazing! Anyways, at this point it was nearing the time for the meeting. The welcome meeting just went over some basic information about dorm life. Cool thing about these dorms that I doubt other colleges allow. We're allowed to drink in our rooms as long as everyone in the room is of age. How crazy is that?

The rest of the night was uneventful. Met some people. Finished the meeting. Went back to the room. Realized that after all this time...I'm finally here. =]

Also realized that I haven't slept in over 36 hours. So I passed our for the next 8.
